Is it alright for schools to block some websites from being used by its students?
While some websites are not useful and shouldn’t be used in schools there are
some that students should be given access to. The main problem is teachers only
see the negative aspects of websites instead of the educational ones. So while
there should be restrictions on sights students can go on it shouldn’t be as
strict as it is.
The fact of the matter is some sites do have educational advantages that most people just don’t see. For instance if a teacher wants to go on youtube to show his students a video on how to do a certain project they can’t, because it is blocked. Another example is that certain informational websites are blocked so it makes it harder to find information the student needs. So this may interfere with student’s ability to do well on a project.
The opposition states however that giving students access to any site they want could cause both problems from the students and their parents. They say students will use the internet for going on Facebook, twitter, etc. However this won’t be a problem if students are always accompanied by a teacher when they are in a computer lab. If a teacher is always watching and walking around to see what the students are on, they won’t be able to use the computers incorrectly.
So in conclusion certain sites on computers should be open for the students to use. However there should be restrictions on other sites that have no educational value. This will help improve our school system and keep students away from those sites.
